When the European charts began six years ago, Hogwarts Legacy has the sixth largest launch for a video game. There are only other FIFA games that can compete with it. With other surprise hits like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy’s debut was larger than all Call of Duty games released since 2017.
With only three weeks on the market, Hogwarts Legacy has already become the sixth best-selling game of the past 12 months, just behind FIFA 23, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Elden Ring.

Despite Warner Bros.’s smash hit, February game sales in Europe were just 12.9 million, down 10% from the same month last year. GSD’s numbers reflect the monetary success of video games in the most populous European countries (including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and more). Most major publishers’ digital game sales in every European market are included as well. The bottom of the article has complete information.
This year’s February saw fewer major new releases than last year’s, when games like Elden Ring, Horizon: Forbidden West, Dying Light 2, and Total War: Warhammer 3 were released. The second month of sales for Pokémon Legends: Arceus was also quite successful.
This year was also a downturn for legacy titles. Compared to February 2021, sales of both GTA 5 and Mario Kart 8: Deluxe are down 35% and 39%, respectively. The exception to this trend is Red Dead Redemption 2, whose sales are up 6% year-over-year. Atomic Heart, a war shooter, is the next best new release, entering at number nine.
The Last of Us Part 2 and The Last of Us Remastered also rose in the rankings, thanks in large part to the success of the HBO show based on the games. Sales of Part 2 were up 317% compared to the same month a year ago, and sales of the Remastered edition were up 285%.
Many of February’s top-selling video game console and personal computer titles are missing from this list. Metroid Prime Remastered, which unexpectedly released on Nintendo Eshop in the middle of the month, is absent since Nintendo is the only major AAA games publisher that doesn’t share its digital data. The much-anticipated survival game Sons of the Forest, as well as those from most other smaller publishers, are currently missing.
February is a Good Month for Sales of the Ps5 and Xbox
In terms of game consoles, PlayStation 5 sales in Europe skyrocketed last month, increasing fivefold when compared to the same month a year ago. Sales of the PlayStation 5 were incredibly slow at the beginning of 2016 as a result of widespread supply problems.
GSD’s hardware data includes several European markets, but not the UK and Germany, which are two of the continent’s most populous nations. The UK hardware report is available for reading at this link.
The PlayStation 5 outsold the Nintendo Switch by more than two to one across all European markets that were monitored. Sales of switches in Europe are down 28%, matching a similar drop in the UK. The new Zelda game and the Mario movie will be the focus of Nintendo’s upcoming second-quarter marketing campaign for the Switch.
Finally got around to finishing Hogwarts Legacy.
Fun game.
Main story unfortunately isn't very good but the real charm with this game is the open world. Exploring outside & inside Hogwarts is magical. Tons of enjoyable side activities/adventures with addictive combat mechanics. pic.twitter.com/tDaY9z79Yb

Microsoft’s Xbox Series S and X may be in third place in Europe, but sales are up 13% compared to the same month last year. In the accessories category, sales in European markets dropped by 0.2% to 1.27 million units in the previous month. The success of the PS5 DualSense controller in the home console market has stimulated development in this sector.
The number of these cards sold in Europe totaled 1.15 million, a decrease of 8% from the previous year.
