Although it’s only been out for a few days, it has already surpassed Forspoken in sales on Steam this week. The latest offering from Bethesda’s Tango Gameworks has been met with praise from reviewers and players despite the lackluster marketing effort around its release.
It would appear that the game’s commercial success has continued. Hi-Fi Rush, out on January 25, 2023, is a rhythm-based action game with a cell-shaded aesthetic reminiscent of games like Jet Set Radio and Sunset Overdrive 2.
Until the release of Hi-Fi Rush, Tango Gameworks had primarily developed horror games like The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo. The company has branched out significantly from its prior work by releasing a rhythm-based action title.
The game has been met with mixed reviews, but its recent success implies that Tango Gameworks made the right decision. A report of the week ending January 29th’s best-selling titles on Steam places Hi-Fi Rush at number eight.
Unlike Tango’s title, published a day earlier, Forspoken PS5‘s sales on Steam were not among the top ten during the same week. That’s quite a difference, especially when you consider that Forspoken costs $70, and Hi-Fi Rush costs only $30 to purchase.
Despite being demoted to the shadows, the rhythm-based action game has received 98% positive reviews on Steam, while Forspoken has received mixed reviews (though its PC troubles may have hurt its reputation).
Second and third place on Steam’s best-sellers list go to games other than Hi-Fi Rush, including Hogwarts Legacy and the Dead Space reboot. It is intriguing that Hogwarts Legacy has been doing well in sales even though it won’t be released until February 7. It remains to be seen if the game can achieve the same level of success as Hi-Fi Rush or Forspoken.

Hi-Fi Rush’s future is up in the air at the moment. The film’s popularity may indicate that production will continue on a sequel, but the studio has made no such announcement. However, the game’s shadow drop tactic may be a precursor of Xbox’s future success.
Microsoft may have more exciting announcements for its 2023 Xbox lineup if the company’s recent Xbox Developer Direct is any hint. The PC and Xbox One X/S versions of Hi-Fi Rush can now be purchased.
