Some gamers may have thought a certain character was permanently dead in the GTA universe, but they will be pleased to learn that they will be able to interact with them again in GTA Online. Over the course of over a decade, GTA Online has grown immensely. Beginning around six months before the events of Grand Theft Auto V’s story mode, the game’s multiplayer mode included a number of returning characters.
Rockstar Software first resisted moving the narrative forward and showing characters like Franklin years after the story finished, but eventually came to see that doing so made more sense. This has opened up a ton of exciting possibilities in GTA Online, including the return of a character that was previously thought to be dead.

As seen in the latest video for Grand Theft Auto Online‘s The Last Dose update, Michael’s therapist, Dr. Friedlander, will be making a return. Given his apparent wealth and power, it’s not surprising that the good doctor would be a drug lord. It’s not hard to envision that, as a crazy psychiatrist in a mockumentary of Hollywood, he chose to assist his patients by peddling psychedelics.
Players that finished Grand Theft Auto V and sat in on all of Michael’s therapy sessions are aware of the rift between Michael and Dr. Friedlander. The therapist says he has a book and TV deal and is leaving Los Santos to pursue both; he also says he will reveal Michael’s story but under an assumed name. After that, Michael can either release Friedlander or kill him to keep his criminal activities a secret.
Rockstar apparently considered Dr. Friedlander’s dismissal and subsequent life of celebrity to be the definitive ending for his character in Grand Theft Auto V. Whether or not Dr. Friedlander survives the latest Grand Theft Auto Online patch is anyone’s guess at this point.
It’s highly possible that you’ll be given the mission of eliminating him, and that your decision to do so will become the de facto canonical one. In any case, it’s fantastic to watch such a peculiar figure reprise an even more peculiar role.
Los Santos Drug Wars reaches its eye-popping conclusion with an explosion of hallucinations, kidnapping and revenge in The Last Dose.
