The success of Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to surpass that of its ground-breaking predecessor, but that could change if the online component fails to live up to fans’ expectations. According to a recent leak, an unexpected cost-cutting strategy for the most recent GTA game may be something Take-Two is exploring.
According to GTA Forums leaker Tez2, Take-Two previously rejected a dedicated server idea because it was “cost-prohibitive.” Also mentioned by Tez2 was the possibility of “explosion shenanigans” in GTA 6.
Even though Rockstar is supposedly making every attempt to prevent these explosions, there is no assurance that the endeavor will be successful in the finished game.
As is to be expected, some commenters voiced the opinion that delaying the purchase of dedicated servers was a pointless, cheap move that might hinder development.
Due to GTA’s popularity, it is tough to imagine that the corporation would struggle to pay for dedicated servers. Since its debut in 2013, GTA 5 has sold more than 180 million copies globally, according to Take-Two’s 2023 annual financial report.
It has already brought in billions of dollars for the firm, so it shouldn’t have any trouble stabilizing the game’s online component. GTA 5 is one of the most popular video games ever, making any leak (like this one) make a commotion once it reaches the mainstream media.
One fan expressed dissatisfaction, saying, “Dedicated server usage was pretty well established a few years ago, but they’re now an expected part of the package of any online game. If [Take-Two and Rockstar] are still refusing to fully adopt them for GTAO2 then that is just a really bad look honestly.”
Some well-known games with dedicated servers include Valorant, Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, FIFA, and Rocket League. There are some bright spots, though.
One commenter mentioned how games like Destiny 2 maintain their fan communities without using dedicated servers. Based on previous remarks from developers, one Destiny fan created a comprehensive GitHub report about the intricate networking system in Destiny 2.
(The commenter claims that rather than a dedicated server, Destiny 2 makes use of an authoritative server type.) The absence of dedicated servers shouldn’t be a problem if GTA 6 has an equally complex architecture that functions just as well.

It’s vital to remember that Take-Two hasn’t made any official announcements about GTA 6’s dedicated servers. The release of GTA 6 is still years away, giving the company time to devise a solution that reduces the risks or alters its plan to use dedicated servers.
According to Rockstar’s CEO’s remarks on the most recent Take-Two earnings call, GTA 6 could arrive between October 2024 and September 2025.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stated, “In Fiscal 2025, we expect to enter this new era by launching several groundbreaking titles that we believe will set new standards in our industry.”
“We expect to sustain this momentum by delivering even higher levels of operating results in Fiscal 2026 and beyond.”
