Ghostwire Tokyo Gameplay: Tango Gameworks and Bethesda Softworks collaborated in 2022 to create the action-adventure game Ghostwire: Tokyo. On March 25, 2022, the game was launched around the world on PlayStation 5 and Windows as a timed exclusive that would last for a year.

First-person shooter meets action adventure in Ghostwire: Tokyo. As the player, you have access to a wide range of psychic and paranormal skills that can be used to vanquish the spirits and ghosts that plague Tokyo. Director of combat Shinichiro Hara dubbed the game’s fight sequences “karate meets magic,” as the player uses Kuji-Kiri-inspired hand moves to unleash spells.

At the outset, a ghost (Kazuhiko Inoue) is seen hovering above the site of a car crash. The ghost chooses Akito, a young child played by Kensuke Nishi, who was knocked out and is now its host. Akito regains consciousness with full control of his physical self, however, the spirit has taken command of his right hand.

A horrible fog will come in soon, transforming anyone caught in it into a ghost. Since he is possessed by a spirit, Akito is spared. Screens across the neighborhood show a guy in a Hannya mask, who introduces himself as Hannya (Shunsuke Sakuya) and casts a spell to entrap wicked spirits in cages across Shibuya. The spirit tells Akito he must find Hannya and kill him, but Akito persuades him to let him instead visit the hospital to see how his sister, Mari, is doing (Asami Seto).

To help Akito fight the evil beings called by Hannya, the spirit bestows upon him supernatural abilities based on the spirit world. After making it to Mari’s hospital room, the two discover that Hannya has beaten them there and plans to use Mari in a ritual because of her unusual condition while in a coma.

When Akito tries to intervene, Hannya’s allies tie him up, and Hannya stabs him in the chest before he abducts Mari. It is shown in a flashback that Mari was unconscious after being caught in a home fire. Akito has a conversation with the ghost (who tells him to name him KK) and gets his assistance in defeating Hannya. KK rescues Akito and instructs him to go to a hiding place he has prepared.

At the hideout, KK admits that he and his team of investigators attempted and failed to stop Hannya. KK sends Akito to the Kagerie Observation tower to look for leads, and Akito spots one of Hannya’s accomplices entering a tunnel leading to the subway. Following Hannya and his allies, the two discover a secret temple where the ritual is being prepared.

KK discloses that Hannya has a sinister plot to take enough souls to break down the veil between the living and the dead and spend eternity with his wife and daughter. When Hannya and the others flee, the one Akito pursued remains behind to fight. The enemy’s disguise is blown away, revealing it to be a puppet constructed out of KK’s own flesh and blood. Because of this, the puppet is distracted and uses its abilities to detach KK from Akito and seal him away, rendering Akito helpless.

After regaining consciousness, Akito makes his way to the surface and then returns to KK’s hideout to plot his next move. There he encounters Rinko, an old business associate of KK’s, who gives him KK’s commuter pass case, complete with a photo of KK with his wife and son. Rinko reveals to Akito that he is still linked to KK, and the two of them use that fact to track down and reunite with one another.

In the split second, before the two are reunited, a shaft of light appears, signaling that Hannya has begun his ritual. Both of them go after Hannya, and they catch up to him just as he begins the rite. Hannya’s wife and daughter were used to creating puppets that face the two, showing that they are allies of the enemy.

The daughter puts up a fight but is ultimately overcome, and KK has Akito remove the charm from the puppet. They arrive too late, however, as Hannya has already released a massive spirit monster onto the town before disappearing into the poisonous fog.

Hannya removes Mari from the room for the ritual’s closing ceremonies. KK, who was unable to keep up on foot, shared that Rinko had built a special motorcycle that could see through the mist. With the final piece in place, the two set forth into the mist.

In the process of crossing, they are ambushed by the KK puppet, who destroys the bike. As they enter Tokyo Tower, the mother puppet attacks, but the two manage to defeat her and set her free. As soon as they reach the peak, Hannya grabs Mari and dives headfirst into the gaping maw of the colossal spirit monster. The KK puppet tries to attack them again, but the two of them are able to beat it and set it free.

In an effort to put an end to Hannya for good, the two make the decision to plunge into the gaping maw of the huge spirit monster. On the inside, they go through a series of doors that each displays a different memory of Akito and Mari. Exposing Akito’s icy emotional reserve, which further deepened following the passing of his parents.

Mari’s depression was almost suicidal after the deaths of her parents and Akito’s coldness towards her. Hannya opens a portal to the underworld, and the two heroes track him down just in time. But Mari’s ghost intervenes before the ritual’s completion, sending Hannya hurtling through the gate.

She reminds Akito that the accident wasn’t his fault as her strength gives out. She says she could have gotten out of there, but she went back for their parents’ wedding rings, which were all that was left of them. As Mari passes away, Hannya returns to the surface, where he combines Mari’s and Mari’s daughter’s and wife’s souls to form a hideous being.

The two heroes deal the final blow, setting free all the souls Hannya had imprisoned. As Akito assures Mari that he would change for the better once she dies, his parents’ spirits appear to take her to the afterlife. Crisis averted, Akito returns to the living world as KK’s soul departs.

Ghostwire Tokyo Development

Ghostwire: Tokyo, an action-adventure game with horror elements, was unveiled by Shinji Mikami and Ikumi Nakamura in June 2019 during Bethesda Softworks‘ press conference at E3. In September 2019, after working with Tango Gameworks for nine years, Nakamura announced his resignation.

Ghostwire is not a survival horror game like The Evil Within series, but rather an action-adventure game with some horror aspects. When Tango’s fighting system needed help, they brought on Doom 2016’s combat designer, Shinichiro Hara, to create it.
