When the project in question is a £50 video game in a series that has sold millions of copies around the world, the stakes are naturally higher. And whoever got Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion at Square Enix had a bad day. One of the in-game artworks has a watermark from Getty Images, which was detected.

You can see the painting in question in chapter eight when you go to Shinra Manor. A total of three times may be seen on the wall with this phrase. Kotaku did some digging on Getty Images and found a match: John Crowther’s 1881 glimpse of Fleet Street as seen from Ludgate Circus in London.
You can see the watermark clearly if you zoom in, however, the image has been modified in-game to make it look like an abandoned mansion.
Artworks by British artists are considered to be in the public domain 70 years after the artist’s death, however, the copyright to those works may still exist.

As such, Getty would be the rightful owner of the reproduction utilized in Reunion, and a license to do so would likely be required. The watermark would be eliminated in a paid-for version. Oops.
