It would appear from the outside that this mode is influenced by titles like Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, and Stardew Valley. Right? Naoki Yoshida, a director, and producer, says this is incorrect. The concept for Island Sanctuary, according to GamesRadar(opens in new tab) (via USA Today(opens in new tab)), originated from a different place.
The first inspiration for Island Sanctuary came from a TV segment called The Tetsuwan Dash, not from a game. In essence, the players in this segment are tasked with creating their facilities on a deserted island that exhibits traces of previous habitation utilizing scrap wood, lumber, and trash washed ashore.
As GamesRadar notes, the Survivor series, which has remained largely popular in both the UK and the US, would likely be a near-Western analog of that. Though when Tetsuwan Dash first debuted in 1995, the objective was primarily focused on getting “Dash” put on a map, which Japanese boyband Tokio did by building a village in Fukushima, the two have a fairly similar concept—fend for yourself on an island.
But ultimately the emphasis did change, turning more toward a Survivor-style program and away from using modern technology. Consider more education and less drama. Yoshida believes that variety is essential in the genre, and Island Sanctuary continues to be one of Final Fantasy 14’s more distinctive activities in the MMORPG.
The more different kinds of material an MMORPG provides, the better, he stated. Naturally, requests for fight content are the most frequent, but if you were to ask if it were the best way to grow an MMORPG, I believe the answer is “no.”

Even though the mode was only released in August 2022, many players are already waiting for more because their island levels are already maxed out. With the arrival of Patch 6.3(which opens in a new tab) on January 10, we’ve received additional additions.
New gathering methods and resources have been added, along with two new island tiers and a new building. Along with some general quality-of-life improvements, there are new recipes, animals, and things to acquire. Though still largely linear, people wish there was a little more room for customization.
Yoshida claims that he has several ideas regarding how to accomplish that. The opportunity to set outdoor furniture in the Island Sanctuary, he remarked, would be the very first thing.
