Destiny’s universe is a remarkable invention with boundless potential. Some of the first explorers to be sent into this cosmos are the Idea team members. By sending spacecraft to the ground below, we scour the cosmos for fresh inspiration, new avenues of inquiry, and the means to produce eye candy guaranteed to energize our crew and delight our customers. Strange occurrences are investigated and linked to the game’s overall storyline.
We’d want to explain how we work and what we seek in potential collaborators so that other creatives can benefit from our experience.
What It’s Like to Work on the Destiny 2 Concept Team
We’re working on a live-game schedule, so new material will be rolling out often. There are currently eight people on the Idea team, including a producer. Each week has a set of goals, some of which are new and some of which are staples like returning elements like weapons and armor. We focus on supporting and collaborating with the other teams to ship each release, as we have numerous Seasonal releases and a large campaign each year.

Teamwork to Solve a Puzzle is the Fun Part
When designing a new weapon, we first ask ourselves things like, Is this a Legendary or an Exotic? Do we want to convey a certain type of gaming function (damage, weapon, etc.)? Are we doing this as part of a quest? Tell me about the history of this weapon. Many questions, alas.
The process of creating a visual design that represents function and gameplay begins with the concept artists sketching, writing, and gathering references. We try to think beyond the box as much as possible. Here is where the artist’s own preference and life experience come into play, and we like to elaborate on our decisions. So, early on in the process, when we’re having a concept talk, it’s always exciting to hear those stories and see those initial images.
We all comment on and praise the idea being presented. It’s also fun for us to speculate and wonder about hypothetical situations because we have so many questions. One of the most exciting aspects of working on a concept team is taking part in discussions like this.
As an artist is nearing the completion of an idea, we typically show it around to the other teams to get their input and critiques, both technical and aesthetic. We also take into account the art directors’ suggestions on how things should look.
The idea or thesis of a design is the most crucial component of a Destiny concept artist’s day-to-day work, although there are numerous things that can be said about it. Some people get their big ideas from chatting with friends over lunch; others may get theirs from a marathon session on Pinterest; and still, others may come up with their thesis while watching a funny cat video on YouTube.
Once a concept has been conceived, the next step is to put it into visual form so that it may be shared with others. Throughout Destiny’s development and expansion, we’ve had the good fortune to be in the presence of brilliant minds and, more significantly, to travel alongside our fellow creatives.
We are proud to officially join the incredible team at PlayStation, we are excited for the future of our company, and we are inspired to bring together players from all over the world to form lasting friendships and memories.

Spectacle of Design
The writing of Destiny has elements of both science fiction and fantasy. If you put these two together, you get something totally unexpected and entertaining. Yet the use of contrasting ideas is undeniably a trademark of the series. We have a wealth of Destiny art to draw from by 2022; the question is how to build on it while keeping the aesthetic consistent.
An integral aspect of the Destiny aesthetic is the combination of narrative and utility in design. Our goal is to create aesthetics that have depth and resonance within the canon.
Is there a particular artistic method that inspired this style? The majority of our work is done digitally, but everyone on the team has their own style and preferred software, so there is no magic brush or technique that can make an object conform to the current aesthetic direction.

Portfolio
Excellent technique. Similarly to this, there is plenty of cases to consider. Yet, the visual representation of an idea is what we prioritize while reviewing a portfolio. Providing an explanation of your thought process is also highly beneficial. It’s helpful to display your thought process by including reference photographs, sketches, and work in progress.
Our next criterion is reliability. Is it possible for you to maintain a high standard of originality and realism throughout a wide range of project elements, including but not limited to: environments, weaponry, vehicles, props, characters, graphic design, etc.?
