Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware created Elden Ring in 2022 as an action role-playing game. The world-building was done by fantasy author George R. R. Martin, and it was directed by the legendary Hidetaka Miyazaki. On February 25th, it was made available for the PlayStation 4, PS5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Players in Elden Ring take charge of a character they’ve created as they set out to become the new Elden Lord by mending the Elden Ring. The game is played from a third-person perspective, and the open world is free for exploration. Combat using a variety of weapons and magical spells, riding, and crafting are all part of the game.
Elden Ring was conceived by FromSoftware as a natural progression of the Dark Souls series, another open-world action RPG. Miyazaki had high hopes that Martin’s input would result in a more approachable narrative than those of FromSoftware’s prior games because of how much he respected Martin’s work. Although Elden Ring was well-received for its open environment, gameplay features, and setting, the game’s technical performance on PC was panned by reviewers. With over 16.6 million copies sold by July 2022, the game was a huge success.
Gameplay
Elden Ring is a third-person action role-playing game with a focus on battle and exploration, akin to the Dark Souls series, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, all of which were created by FromSoftware. The Lands Between is an open world where players are able to roam from one of its six main areas, such as Limgrave, with its green plains and old ruins, to Caelid, a wasteland filled with undead beasts.
The player can fast-travel between non-battle locations and use their mount, Torrent, to freely roam the open world. Everywhere you walk in the game, you’ll run into NPCs and opponents, including the demigods who dominate the game’s hub areas and act as the game’s primary bosses. Elden Ring’s hidden dungeons include catacombs, tunnels, and caves where players can take on bosses and find useful loot in addition to the game’s open-world environments.
At the beginning of the game, the player selects a character class to customize their first arsenal of spells and items. Battles can be fought either up close and personal with melee weapons or at a distance with ranged weapons and spells. Shields and evading are useful for dealing with enemy attacks.
Elden Ring’s spellbook has a wide variety of options for bolstering the player’s arsenal, engaging in long-distance combat, and healing wounds. The player can only memorize so many spells before they have to be learned all over again. These spells are cast with the help of staff or Sacred Seal.
Ashes of War, which can be found in Elden Ring, are used to upgrade weapons and give them new abilities. Each Ash of War applied to a weapon grants it a new Weapon Art, a unique power that can be used in combat. You don’t always have to engage in direct battle; stealth mechanics allow you to sneak up on enemies or even land critical hits while you’re hidden from sight.
Sites of Grace are checkpoints dispersed over the game world that allow the player to improve their stats, alter their spellbook, switch Ashes of War, or use the game’s fast travel system. Players can opt to resurrect at Stakes of Marika if they die to close it, or at the last Site of Grace, they slept. The player must use runes, in-game money obtained by beating foes, to improve their statistics at Sites of Grace.
In addition to being used as currency, runes can be crafted into better weapons and armor. If you die in Elden Ring, whatever runes you have acquired at the time of your death will be left in that area and will be lost forever if you die again before retrieving them.
The game features a crafting system that necessitates the use of resources to build goods. Players need the item’s crafting recipe in order to create the item. Cookbooks are a type of collectible book that contain recipes and can be found all over the world. Defeating opponents, exploring the world, and bartering with merchant NPCs are all viable options for acquiring materials.
Crafted items range from poison darts to exploding pots, and consumables that temporarily increase the player’s strength in combat. Similar to the Dark Souls games, the player can summon friendly NPCs called spirits to fight enemies. Each type of summonable spirit requires its equivalent Spirit Ash for summoning; different types of Spirit Ashes can be discovered as the player explores the game world. Spirits can only be summoned near structures called Rebirth Monuments, which are primarily found in large areas and inside boss fight arenas.
Elden Ring has a multiplayer system that allows players to be summoned for both cooperative and player versus player (PvP) play over the Internet. Cooperative play involves the placing of a Summon Sign on the ground, which causes the sign to appear in the world of online players who have used a Furlcalling Finger Remedy.
If another player interacts with the sign, whoever placed the sign is summoned into their world. Cooperative players remain in the same world until the boss of the area is defeated, or until a summoned player dies and is sent back to their home world. PvP combat involves using a Summon Sign to directly challenge another player to a duel, or using items called the Bloody Finger or Recusant Finger to invade the worlds of others. World hosts may also use a Taunter’s Tongue to increase the likelihood that their world will be invaded by others, as well as decrease the time between invasions.
