Death loop is the first must-play PS5 exclusive. Recently buy a PS5? Getting a PS5 isn’t easy. Sony can’t meet demand due to chronic chip shortages, thus consoles fly off the shelf. The demand is for a glossy, scarce new PlayStation, not a cutting-edge game.
Xbox Fans! Come to Blackreef and meet the Visionaries on September 20. We’re coming to @Xbox and @XboxGamePass soon.

Ratchet and Clank and Returnal are terrific deals for PS5 owners, but not for new buyers. Changed by Deathloop. Death loop, which launched Tuesday after two delays, is hypnotic and perplexing.
You’ll need a powerful PC to play it comfortably. The Xbox Series X|S may get it next year, although that’s unconfirmed. Death loop is a murder-puzzle game by Dishonored developer Arkane Studios. You play as Colt, who wakes up on Blackreef Island in a time loop — ugh. Colt must kill seven Visionaries within the same loop to break the cycle. Murder puzzle.
Arkane Studios’ execution rocks. Deathloop’s battle system and story are plenty of inventiveness. Colt, PS5 aesthetics, or Deathloop’s time loop aren’t the stars. Blackreef is the fascinating island you’ll want to explore endlessly.
Death Loop Is About Repeating The Same Day, Thus Timing Is Crucial
Karl’s Bay, Updam, Fristad Rock, and The Complex comprise Blackreef. Each section is open morning, noon, afternoon, and night. Each level varies with time. Time of day affects which characters appear and which sections are accessible. Sunrise and sunset change enemies’ behavior (and location).
For each loop, choose where to go and when. One place per time of day is allowed. Colt can level up in the morning, noon, afternoon, and evening. Loop resets. You can explore four of 16 levels per day. What you do affects the next day. Colt must figure out how to combine four stages to destroy all Visionaries in one loop. You know who and why, now find out when, where, and how.
The gameplay premise is dangerous. In Deathloop’s 25 hours, you’ll repeat four stages. Changes throughout the day keep things new. Death loop has a couple of portions you’ll go through multiple times, which can get tiresome, but the battle system makes up for it.
Dishonored fans won’t be surprised that each Deathloop level is a sandbox with riddles and adversaries. You have weaponry, a hacking gadget, and unique powers to clear the route. You can blast your way to them, utilize stealth to clear the route, or (largely) avoid enemy engagement.
You’ll have access to firearms, Slabs, and trinkets. Slabs give you nasty powers like temporary invisibility, while trinkets boost your health, ammo, or double jump. Colt can only equip two Slabs at once, so be selective. Some Slabs are great for playing Rambo, while others are more discreet.
You’ll require timing, precision, and coordination, passive or aggressive. Mindless shooting will kill you if you linger too long or shoot without thinking. Colt is a badass, but he’s no superman; clearing foes takes skill and planning. The launch day trailer showed Colt slaying Eternalists in ways I never dreamt of.
So is Deathloop’s fighting. It offers choices, but none are easy. Other games let you try several playstyles, but don’t demand them all. The death loop enables constant experimentation. You’ll be replaying the same regions. I’d kill Eternalists, then find a window or crawl space for sneakier players. Next time I visited, I’d use stealth instead of explosions to kill evil folks. The death loop is remarkable because each loop is both the same and distinct.
Two parties
Julianna keeps things interesting day-to-day, not just the level design. She taunts you as she foils your plans to break the loop in Deathloop. While you kill Visionaries, Julianna kills you. Colt and Julianna’s interaction is remarkable. Julianna knows everything about Colt, who is dazed. Colt doesn’t know why Juliana hates him. Blackreef’s riddles are tantalizing.
Julianna’s Scary
Julianna is often on the hunt as you play a level. All level exits are closed. You can hack a radio transmitter to reopen them and flee or try to get Julianna before she gets you. Defeating her nets your weapons and Slab improvements.
Multiplayer mode. The death loop has two options: “Break the loop” or “Protect the loop.” The former is the story mode option. Choosing the latter enables you to play as Julianna and invade another player’s game, like in Dark Souls.
Fun, but inconsistent multiplayer. First, it’s had connection troubles, which should be rectified as the game releases. Your multiplayer experience is determined by your opponent. If you’re up against a camper, whether it’s an invading Julianna or a Colt, you can run for 20 minutes without any action. Multiplayer action culminates in exhilarating showdowns and fosters strategy and innovation.
Multiplayer can disrupt the game flow. When you’re deep in the story, Julianna will make you groan rather than thrill. Refusing and invading Julianna is haughty, and breaking Colt’s loop is sadistic. If bad connections or tough opponents annoy you, turn off online mode. AI-controlled Julianna’s will still invade.
Hidden Treasure
Deathloop’s personality will be obvious to anyone who’s seen a trailer. It’s slick, trendy, and eccentric. Arkane Studios uses superb voice acting and spectacular images to create a unified, consistent, and cool world.
Colt and Julianna are engaging protagonists, and the time loop is fascinating. Blackreef is Deathloop’s best asset. Its appealing personality and stunning (and frightening) scenery.
As Colt, you feel like you’re invading a happy world. Observe the Eternalists and you’ll hear them discuss and goad one another into dangerous antics, as dying in Blackreef means starting your day over. Sometimes you’ll hear them ask Colt’s queries.
Colt finds Visionaries’ documents, tapes, and computer-archived chats to further the plot. As you learn about Blackreef, you’ll notice how the Visionaries are active in their own activities. Blackreef isn’t an open-world game, but it feels like an island full of activities and intoxicated Eternalists.
The death loop is at its best when it drip-feeds information about Blackreef’s past and future. I have numerous questions after 30 hours with Deathloop. I need more knowledge as I learn more. Blackreef is an island puzzle you can’t resist solving.
