What you should know about Dead Island 2, the eagerly anticipated sequel to a cult favorite. Dead Island 2 has been in the works for some now. One of the new games in 2023 that can’t be ignored is the long-awaited follow-up to Techland’s zombie-bashing slaughter-fest.
Developer Dambuster Studios and publisher Deep Silver have finally put this bloody sequel back on track after years of derailed plans and restarts. We’re already impressed by what we’ve seen and experienced thus far. Further information about our firsthand experiences may be found in our preview of Dead Island 2 and our chat with the game’s director.
Dambuster revealed that the game would be delayed until April to give it one last polish before its initial launch date of February 2023, when it would have joined other future PS5 and Xbox Series X games. And hey, what will a couple of extra weeks hurt after 12 years of waiting?
Fortunately, a lot of information is available to us as we wait for the gore-gorgeous shoreline of post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, including a gameplay clip that will whet your appetite—all the information you need about Dead Island 2, including release information.
Dead Island 2 Release Date
Dead Island 2 was scheduled for release in February 2023; Dambuster Studios and Deep Silver have since revealed that the game will debut on April 21, 2023, 11 weeks later than initially planned. The Tweet explain it.

According to Dambuster, who was speaking about the most recent Dead Island 2 delay: “We recognize the irony in postponing Dead Island 2, and we share your disappointment. Development is now in its final 12 short weeks of delay, and we will take our time to ensure we can release a game we’re pleased with. We appreciate you persevering with us if you have been waiting for years.”
Dead Island 2 Gameplay
We’re pleased to announce that Dead Island 2 will be released via the Epic Store on the PC. Many of you have been curious whether Dead Island 2 will be one of the forthcoming PC titles to watch. Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and Series X are the additional platforms for Dead Island 2 that have been officially announced.
The Storyline for Dead Island 2
Dead Island 2’s narrative opens on an evacuation plane as it rescues you and other survivors from the otherwise overrun, condemned streets of Los Angeles. But when your jet crashes, you’re on your own to scavenge through the rubble.
Then, after being bitten by a zombie while fighting it, your character discovers that they don’t convert into zombies, which leads them to believe that they must be immune to the virus that causes zombies to appear.
It’s now up to you to join with other survivors, clear a path across the deserted city, and call the authorities to arrange for the rescue of your entire team.

Dead Island 2 Gameplay
Dead Island 2 completely overhauls everything we know and love about the first game. “Districts” have been created on the map, according to game director David Stenton. Despite continuing to emphasize physical hack-and-slash action, the combat has changed since 2011.
Fortunately, we were able to test out two different builds of the game, beginning with our first experience with Dead Island 2. We could tell from this the careful thought Dambuster had placed into the FLESH mechanism. The graphically horrifying, anatomically precise game aims to mimic the humor and revulsion of 80s horror, injecting some much-needed fun into such a graphically disturbing game.
To develop a flexible deck of skills that you may alter at any time, you’ll be gathering skill cards to add to it. Due to the “symphony of the combat sandbox,” as Stenton referred to it in our most recent Dead Island 2 preview and interview with Dambuster, there is no shortage of options to support your preferred playstyle. These include perfect dodges that stun adversaries and health-replenishing war cries.
Dead Island 2 Trailers
Aside from the now-iconic E3 2014 zombie transformation cinematic embedded below, there wasn’t much news about the Dead Island 2 teaser for a while.
Then Deep Silver and Dambuster Studios surprised us with a fresh reveal video and some brand-new, contemporary in-game footage at Gamescom 2022. Let’s examine the process of development. Here is the Dead Island 2014 E3 announcement trailer to help you remember.

Dead Island 2 Combat
It’s undeniable that Dead Island 2 strives to have the “best in class” combat and is making great strides in that direction. With their in-house FLESH technology, Deep Silver claims that Dead Island 2’s fighting creates “the most intense, visceral, and horrific first-person experience possible.” The six playable characters in Dead Island 2 all have a lot of weaponry, and they each have their own distinct personalities and language, as well as specialized starting skill cards.
Even better, you may completely customize each character’s powers thanks to the innovative skill deck system, which enables you to quickly respec characters to try out different builds.
Dead Island 2 Setting
The setting of Dead Island 2 is an extremely bloody Los Angeles. We’ll have the chance to visit some of the city’s most well-known spots with Dambuster, from the Beverly Hills area to Venice Beach’s sun-drenched boardwalk and beyond. Hell-A is proving to be an ideal battleground for this co-op action game because it is positively brimming with weaponry and undead.
The game’s six primary characters are referred to as Slayers, and just like in the first Dead Island, you can’t change your Slayer after you’ve made your decision:
- Carla
- Dani
- Ryan
- Amy
- Jacob
- Bruno
Dead Island 2 co-op
While the zombies may be enjoyed in full single-player mode and in Dead Island 2 co-op, buddying up with two friends in teams of three seems like a lot of fun. As players explore Dead Island 2’s “thrilling” pulp plot and interact with its cast of multicultural people within its “twisted” reality, Deep Silver believes that “replayability is guaranteed.” At this point, it’s unclear how co-op will be presented in Dead Island 2; whether it will be accessible right away or interwoven into the game’s story mode like Dying Light 2 is to be determined.
Dead Island 2 Development
To put it mildly, Dead Island 2 has had a protracted development process. Before the project was formally unveiled at E3 2014, production on the sequel was rumored to have started in 2012 with Yager Development at the lead.
The following year, Sumo Digital took over development, and three years ago in 2019, Dambuster Studios assumed major responsibility for Dead Island 2.
It’s difficult to determine how much the game has altered from its origin to the present given how little information has been available during its development. With the release date for Dead Island 2 now known, we anticipate seeing more before the game’s debut.
